Site Outage.  Our site was down last Thursday through much of Saturday due to an "unscheduled emergency maintenance" on our web server.  Sorry about that.  The worst part is that we sent out Issue 14 of our e-Newsletter Wednesday night.  While the site was down, some of our subscribers had no way of accessing the featured stories referenced in the e-Newsletter.

"The Mexican" releases on August 7The Mexican.  DreamWorks' $67 million comedy-adventure, starring Julia Roberts an Brad Pitt, is being released to DVD on August 7.  The DVD will feature almost 30 minutes of deleted scenes, including new comedic story lines such as a new wedding scene.  Other bonus features include an audio commentary by director Gore Verbinski, screenwriter J.H. Wyman, and editor Craig Wood, a "making-of" featurette, production notes, cast and crew bios, and theatrical trailers.  As with almost all DreamWorks DVDs, The Mexican features both Dolby Digital and DTS surround sound.  The suggested retail is $26.95.  You can pre-order a copy from Amazon.com.

New DVD Movie Reviews.  We recently posted our reviews of the high tech paranoid thriller Antitrust, and Jet Li's Once Upon A Time in China II.  Check out these and other reviews on our DVD movie reviews page.

How is everyone doing this week?  Here we are with another update for you this week.

Our first HTML e-Newsletter.  In our last (free) e-Newsletter, we polled whether our subscribers would prefer the old text-based e-Newsletter or a new HTML version. With overwhelming response, the clear preference was HTML (though a number of our subscribers really wanted to keep the text version).  So here we are with our first HTML e-Newsletter.  Our plan is to roll out at least one e-Newsletter per month, around the first Tuesday of each month.  And when there's significant news or an interesting development, we'll follow up with another e-Newsletter as needed.  If you're not a subscriber already, you can sign up here.  It's free and you can unsubscribe at any time.

Star Wars: Episode 1 Release Date.  Given all the rumors flying around the internet about the release date of The Phantom Menace, we decided to check this out ourselves with our studio contact. And guess what?  They replied saying that they can neither confirm or deny the rumor, but added that we may be receiving some official information on it very soon.  Cool! As Jar Jar would say, "we se wait long enough."  We'll let you know as soon as we hear anything more or official...

Panasonic DMR-E20 DVD recorderPanasonic introduces a DVD recorder offering backwards compatibility.  Panasonic announced its second generation DVD recorder. The Panasonic DMR-E20 DVD recorder will debut in October for $1,500 list price and will offer recording capability for DVD-R as well as DVD-RAM.  The write-once DVD-R format allows for backwards compatibility with virtually all existing DVD players.  We think this is a move in the right direction for Panasonic, whose previous DVD recorder used only the DVD-RAM format, which is incompatible with current DVD players.  It's just the latest sign of convergence in the recordable DVD format war which has at least three competing camps: DVD-RW, DVD+RW, DVD-RAM.  For more information about this DVD recorder, read the full press release.

Upcoming Releases and Release Date Adjustments.  On our Upcoming Releases page, we've added some more titles: Monkeybone (7/10), Wayne's World (7/10), Wayne's World 2 (7/10), Mommy Dearest (7/17), Enemy at the Gates (8/14), Kramer vs. Kramer (8/28), My Best Friend's Wedding (8/28), The Never Ending Story (9/4), The Never Ending Story II (9/4), Home for the Holidays (9/4), The French Lieutenant's Woman (9/4), Little Man Tate (9/4), Under Fire (9/4), and Quigley Down Under (9/4) .  Then with respect to street date adjustments, The Mask of Zorro: Special Edition has been postponed to August 28, from June 12.

June 4, 2001

Well, it's almost been a month since we've updated this page.  But we're back!  As you can guess, we've been very busy working on our web site re-design.  We're still trying to debug some unexpected "features" and will be converting the rest of the site content to the new design over the course of this month.  Thanks for your patience and support.  If you have any comments on the site re-design, send them to us at Feedback@TimeForDVD.com.  Thanks, as always, we welcome your feedback and suggestions.  Anyways, we're back and without further delay, we've got a ton of update for you.

New DVD Movie Reviews.  First up, we've got half a dozen new DVD movie reviews: Cast Away (available on June 12), Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (which comes out tomorrow, June 5), Vertical Limit, What Women Want, Quills, and Bounce.  There's a lot of good movies in this bunch, so be sure to check out these reviews.

A Tiger and a Dragon On Sale.  If you're looking to pick up a copy of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, head on over to your local Best Buy (in stores only) on Tuesday (June 5) and pick it up for only $16.99 (about 39% off -- which is pretty good).  Don't wait too long, the sale will be over this Saturday (June 9).

Upcoming Releases.  On our Upcoming Releases page, we've got a massive update for you (in trying to catch up on some recent announcements): Dude, Where's My Car? (6/26), Head Over Heals (7/3), Jurassic Park DVD Collection 2-pack with Jurassic Park and The Lost World: Jurassic Park (7/10), The Family Man (7/17), The Caveman's Valentine (7/17), Once Upon A Time in China 3-pack with Jet Li's Once Upon A Time in China parts I, II, and II (7/17), Pollock (7/24), Sweet November (7/24), Akira (7/24), Hanover Street (7/31),  Short Circuit 2 (7/31), Trumpet of the Swan (animated, 7/31), American Pie: Ultimate Edition in either R-rated version or unrated version (re-release as Ultimate Edition, 7/31),  The Mexican (8/7), Fly Away Home: SE (re-release as an anamorphic widescreen Special Edition, 8/7), 15 Minutes (New Line's infinifilm, 8/14), Tomcats (8/14),  Meet Joe Black: Ultimate Edition (re-release as Ultimate Edition, 8/14), Silence of the Lambs: SE (re-release as a Special Edition, 8/21), The Goonies (8/21), The Never Ending Story (8/21), The Never Ending Story 2 (8/21), Forrest Gump: SE 2-disc set (8/28), The Adventures of Joe Dirt (8/28), See Spot Run (8/28), The Next Karate Kid (8/28), Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory: 2001 Edition (8/28), The Princess Bride: SE (re-release as a Special Edition, 9/4), Buffy, The Vampire Slayer (The Movie) (9/4), Wallace & Gromit (9/4), Heartbreakers (9/18), and Cape Fear (1991, 9/18).  We'll also keep the "New" designation on specific titles on the Upcoming Releases page for about 10-14 days (a change from only 7-10 days before), for those of you who frequent our site only every other week or so.  It's a quick way to see what titles we've recently added.

Release Date Confirmations.  We got confirmation that Hannibal will in fact be released as a 2-disc Special Edition on August 21.  The DVD will feature a "shocking alternate ending".  As noted above, Silence of the Lambs will be re-released on the same date as a Special Edition.

Release Date Adjustments.  Disney has pulled their scheduled release of Oliver and Company from June 5 indefinitely.  We'll let you know if we hear anything in the future.  We also had incorrectly reported the release date for Cast Away as June 5.  The actual release date is June 12.  Sorry about that.

Some Truth to the Episode 1 DVD Date.  We're hearing that the rumored release date for Star Wars: Episode 1--The Phantom Menace of October 16 may have some truth to it after all!  The latest word is that Fox Home Entertainment will make a formal announcement this month.  Let's keep our fingers crossed.  We'll definitely keep you posted on this one.

Rumored Release Date.  Rumor has it that the original Terminator will be re-released as a Special Edition by MGM sometime fourth quarter 2001.

Well, that's it.  We will be returning to our old schedule of updating this page every week or two, or when there's significant news.  Don't be a stranger, and have a good week.
