Archive for December 2000

December 28, 2000

Did everyone have a wonderful Christmas?  We wish you the best for the New Year.  First, we have a couple of DVD movie reviews, followed by some DVD upcoming releases news.

We just completed our review of Under Suspicion, a murder mystery starring Gene Hackman and Morgan Freeman.  If you're a fan of drama or murder mysteries, you won't want to miss this title when it comes out on January 2.  The second title is a romantic comedy with a foreign film flavor, Bossa Nova.  This is a cute comedy about the intertwined love lives of a small group of people in Rio de Janeiro.

"Meet The Parents" comes to DVD on 3/6/01Next, we have details on the March 6 DVD release of the $170 million box office hit Meet The Parents.  The DVD release will be a Collector's Edition sporting both Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1 soundtracks.  Bonus material will include: "Splotlight on Location" the making-of featurette, audio commentary by the director, producer, editor, and cast members (including Robert DeNiro and Ben Stiller), deleted scenes, outtakes, production notes, cast and filmmaker bios, a theatrical trailer, a sneak peak trailer of the upcoming "The Mummy Returns", and a "Lie Detector" game and a "Forecaster" game as DVD-ROM features.  This disc will retail for $26.98.

On our Upcoming Releases page, we added the following titles: Whipped (confirmed for 2/6/01), Mother (2/13/01), The Watcher (2/20/01), Almost Famous (3/13/01), Avalon (3/13/01), The Story of Jacob and Joseph (3/13/01), and Shadow of Doubt (3/13/01).  Then, a couple of street date adjustments for some titles coming out early next year.  Disney's The Kid DVD release is delayed a week, from January 16 to January 23.  The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle is delayed from January 23 to February 13.  The January 9 release of Wonder Boys is delayed by Paramount until sometime in February due to its Golden Globe nomination.

That's probably it from us for the year 2000.  We're holding off a while on the web host transfer, but it will happen sometime before the end of next week.  Well, at least that's the plan.  Happy New Year, everyone!

December 21, 2000
Well, it's almost Christmas everyone... From all of us here, we would like to wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!  Keep warm, cuddle up next to the ones you love, and of course watch some good DVDs.  (There's so many good titles released for this Holiday Season.)

We're pleased to announce the winner of our Mission: Impossible 2 DVD Giveaway (given to one lucky subscriber of our free e-Newsletter):
   S. Bradford of San Antonio, Texas
Congratulations!  And thanks to everyone to participated in this giveaway.

We also thought you would like to know that we are in the process of switching web hosts.  Our domain name (www.TimeForDVD.com) will remain the same, but over the next few days we're moving to a new web server.  During this period, you may experience some anomalies as our new server URL is propagated throughout the internet.  Hopefully, this won't take longer than a couple of days, and by early next week we should be back to normal.  If you send us e-mail, please be patient.  As we may actually lose some e-mails, please re-send if you don't hear from us in a couple of days.  Why are we doing this?  Actually, thanks to the traffic growth that you've been a part of, we're migrating to a new web host that would provide us with more bandwidth/data transfer at a more reasonable cost.  And we're doing it now since the bulk of the holiday shopping is over and we expect the next few days to be rather quiet.  We hope this doesn't cause you much inconvenience as we think it'll be a good thing in the long run.  Thanks for your patience, understanding, and support.

As part of our last major update until the New Year, we have a review of the  Godzilla 2000 DVD.  This is a Japanese-made version of the classic Godzilla character.  Die-hard fans of Godzilla will not want to pass up on this DVD.  Then, on our Upcoming Releases page, we added these titles: Under Suspicion (1/2/01), In Pursuit (2/27/01), The Original Kings of Comedy (2/27/01), The Queens of Comedy (2/27/01), The Broken Hearts Club (3/6/01), and Elvis: That's The Way It Is: Special Edition (3/6/01).  Also note that Lady and the Tramp II - Scamp's Adventure is delayed one week until February 27.

And finally, we recently updated our quick overview pages for Dolby Digital, THX Surround EX, DTS, and DTS Extended Surround.  We made these overviews more stand-alone and added more useful information, including data rates for Dolby Digital and DTS formats--in case you were curious.  If you're not familiar with the different surround sound formats, you may want to read our Surround Sound Formats primer first.

"MultiPlay" logo, ensuring CD-R and CD-RW compatibility
If you're one of those folks who enjoy making your own
CD-Rs and CD-RWs, and want to be able to playback
these media on your DVD player, we've got some good
news.  Last week the Optical Storage Technology
Association (OSTA) announced a new CD-R and CD-RW compatibility specification called MultiPlay.  MultiPlay is
suppose to ensure compatibility of CD-Rs and CD-RWs, burned on their respective computer-based drives or dedicated recorders bearing the MultiPlay logo, with future DVD players also bearing the MultiPlay logo.  So in the near future, you can just look for the MultiPlay logo and buy with confidence.  For more information, visit the MultiPlay web site or read the full press release.

In DVD movie news, New Line announced a street date of March 6 for The Little Vampire DVD.  This family-oriented comedy, starring Jonathan Lipnicki (of Stuart Little and Jerry Maguire fame), will retail for $24.98, and will feature full screen and widescreen versions, Dolby Digital 5.1, Dolby Digital 2.0, three animated menu-based games, jokes, and recipes, and a theatrical trailer.  Also included is a script-to-screen screenplay feature, the original website, and cast and crew filmographies as DVD-ROM content.

December 14, 2000
Today, we have a couple of new DVD movie reviews for you.  First, The Cell is a startling and terrifying look at the inner workings of a serial killer's mind.  If you enjoy a good psychological thriller and don't mind the disturbing and grotesque visuals, you're in for quite a ride.  This DVD releases on December 19.  Next is The Virgin Suicides, also releasing on December 19.  From the title alone, you would guess that it's a rather morbid story.  Well, that's probably not too far from the truth.  But it's worth a look if you're into dramas.  Next, we have details on some highly anticipated upcoming DVD movies.

December 13, 2000

...We interrupt our regularly scheduled program to bring you this special announcement.... Vice-President Al Gore has graciously resigned from the Presidential election and has asked fellow Americans to reunite and support our new President-Elect.  Congratulations to our new President-Elect George W. Bush!  ... whew, we're glad that's over.  So let's reunite as a nation and stand behind George W. Bush, shall we fellow Americans?   Now back to our regularly scheduled program...

Today, we completed our review of Shanghai Triad.  It's a foreign film (Chinese/Mandarin dialogue with English or Spanish subtitles) about the life of a mistress of a Shanghai Mafia "Godfather".  Though it is set around the organized crime community of Shanghai in the 1930s, there is amazingly little violence as the movie is really a drama with deep character studies.  If you're a fan of drama and is open to foreign films, this film is definitely worth a look.

December 11, 2000

My, how time flies when you have DVDs to watch and to keep you busy... do you realize there's only two weeks left before Christmas?  We've been pretty busy writing a number of DVD movie reviews.  Then, we added a number of new upcoming DVD titles.  Are you ready?

First up are a couple of DreamWorks DVD titles.  DreamWorks seems to be putting out some really good titles for this holiday season.  Adding to their list and coming out tomorrow is their latest animated movie, The Road To El Dorado.  We think this DVD is easily worth its weight in gold.  Another gold nugget is the recent DTS re-release of The Prince of Egypt, based on the biblical story of Moses and deliverance of the Hebrew people from slavery (from the book of Exodus).  These are two awesome feature animations from DreamWorks that are not to be missed.

Next, we have a preview of New Line's upcoming Se7en re-release as a 2-disc Platinum Series (scheduled for December 19).  New Line has been releasing some great Platinum Series titles, and Se7en is no exception.  It's a new video transfer and a new audio re-mix that includes both THX Surround EX and DTS-ES Discrete 6.1 soundtracks.  Fans of this movie and of mystery/thrillers will not want to miss this version.

Speaking of thrillers, we also recently reviewed Malice, a smart thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat.  For Russell Crowe (of Gladiator fame) fans, you may be interested in our review of his DVD movie No Way Back.  It's not quite a gladiator of a movie.  For the savvy investors out there, we recently reviewed the 1987 blockbuster hit Wall Street.  Check out these and other DVD movie titles on our DVD movie reviews page.

As far as Upcoming Releases go, we added the following titles: Dr. T. and the Women (2/6/01), Urban Legends: Final Cut (2/6/01), Urban Legend / Urban Legends: Final Cut 2-pack (2/6/01), Manhunter (2/13/01), In the Line of Fire: Special Edition (2/27/01), Dr. Strangelove (2/27/01), and Ben Hur (3/13/01).

December 7, 2000
How is everyone doing?  It's tough out there in the holiday shopping crowd isn't it?  Remember the true reason for the holiday season and you'll be all right.

We've got some DVD movie news for you today.  First up is a chick flick entitled Beautiful coming February 20.  It's about a beauty pageant queen having to re-prioritize her life in order to realize her real dreams and find what is truly beautiful in her life.  It stars Minnie Driver (Return To Me) and Kathleen Turner (Baby Geniuses), and is directed by Sally Field.  The DVD features an anamorphic widescreen transfer for 16x9 widescreen TVs, 4:3 full screen, Dolby Digital 5.1, Dolby surround, English and Spanish subtitles, and five theatrical trailers.  This movie made its theatrical release in 2000 and its DVD will list for $24.95.

"Cirque du Soleil: Dralion" DVD, releases on 1/23/01, click here to pre-order from Amazon.comNext, the new Cirque du Soleil: Dralion DVD will be available January 23.  Dralion is Cirque du Soleil's 12th
live stage show.  Filmed live on stage in San Francisco, Dralion features a combination of ancient Chinese circus tradition and the avant-garde approach of Cirque du
Soleil (for which they are famous).  The DVD will
feature anamorphic widescreen, "the making-of"
featurette, multi-angle performances, and production
notes.  The multi-angle feature should be cool.  If past performance on the Cirque du Soleil: Quidam DVD (available now) is any indication, we would bet that
Dralion will be another all-time favorite.  If fact, Dralion and Quidam will be available together in a two-pack, also released on January 23.  The list price for Dralion will be $24.95, while the two-pack will be $39.95, mere bargains considering the ticket price for the live stage show.

In addition to those titles mentioned above, we added The Second Jungle Book (2/6/01) to our Upcoming Releases page.  Finally, we heard that Buena Vista Home Video has cancelled the DVD release of Reindeer Games: Exclusive Director's Cut for December 12.  They are still planning to release the VHS versions (full screen and widescreen) though.  For whatever reasons they decided to do that, we don't know.  Go figure.  I guess Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer won't be participating in any reindeer games this holiday season.  Sorry, I just had to get that one in there.

December 2, 2000

We have quite a few new upcoming release title announcements for you today: Battlefield Earth (1/16/01), Heaven and Earth (1/16/01), River's Edge (1/23/01), Woman on Top (2/13/01, in time for Valentine's Day), Michael Jordan to the Max (IMAX, 2/13/01), The Greatest Story Ever Told (3/6/01), Revenge of the Nerds and Revenge of the Nerds II (double feature, 2/13/01), Porky's and Porky's II: The Next Day (double feature, 2/13/01), 12 Angry Men (3/6/01), Smilla's Sense of Snow (3/13/01), The Ice Storm (3/13/01), Paradise Road (3/13/01), Grand Canyon (3/13/01).

The Greatest Story Ever Told is a 1965 movie about the life of Jesus, from birth to resurrection, and features an all-star cast with no less than Charlton Heston, Martin Landau, Angela Lansbury, Sidney Poitier, and John Wayne.  MGM spent nearly a half million dollars for the complete restoration of this epic film which was produced with a budget of $20 million (an even larger sum in those days).  The two-disc set will feature an anamorphic widescreen transfer, 2.75:1 aspect ratio, Dolby Digital 5.1, a brand new documentary with interviews with the director and cast, an original "making-of" featurette, deleted scene, photo gallery, an original theatrical trailer, and a collectible booklet.  As we noted above, this title is coming out March 6, in time for Easter.

We also have a number of other family-oriented and children's titles.  All are due out March 6, 2001: All Dogs Go To Heaven, All Dogs Go To Heaven 2, The Secret of NIMH 2, Fluke, Getting Even with Dad, and Napoleon.
