NUON™
NUON™
refers to either (1) a DVD software/movie that has NUON-enhanced features, or (2) a DVD player that
has NUON compatibility and supports the NUON
specific features of NUON-enhanced DVD software. NUON is a proprietary
DVD enhancement from VM Labs, Inc. (It is not part
of the DVD standard.) The NUON feature set provides additional interactive
capabilities when DVD software with NUON content is used with a DVD player
with NUON compatibility.
On the hardware side, think of NUON as a relatively general purpose processor. From the software perspective, DVD-Video content producers (e.g., movie studio) can use the NUON programming interfaces to add NUON-enhanced value-added bonus features to the DVD-Video disc. The level and nature of interactivity is only limited by the imagination of the DVD-Video content provider and the native capabilities of the NUON processing in certain DVD players. Taken to the extreme, VM Labs Inc. claims that NUON technology can provide near video game level of interactivity.
NUON-enhanced DVD software/movies are identified by the NUON logo on the packaging. In order to take advantage of the unique NUON features, you need a DVD player that has NUON enhancements. As of early 2001, there are only two DVD players with the NUON feature: the Toshiba SD-2300 and the Samsung Extiva N-2000. DVD players that support NUON functionality are designated by the NUON logo on their faceplate. As of 2002, it appears that NUON hardware and software support is rapidly waning.
The first NUON-enhanced DVD-Video software/movie title is Fox Home Video's Bedazzled, released on March 13, 2001. Read our full review of the Bedazzled DVD to see what unique NUON features are offered on this ground-breaking DVD.
