Frequency - Hertz

The spectrum of sound is characterized by its range of frequencies. A measure of frequency is cycles per second or Hertz. Humans can typically hear from about 20 Hz (bass) to 20,000 Hz (treble). However, as we age, the frequency range we can actually hear gets narrower. The following illustrates some of the frequencies ranges in movie soundtracks and music:

Bass drums - as low as 30 Hz
Bass guitar - 30 Hz to 200 Hz
Human voice - 100 Hz to 1,700 Hz
     Piano - 25 Hz to 3,600 Hz
Cymbals - up to 15,000 Hz

Audio and video equipment typically have frequency responses in the range of 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz, with wider frequency response being better. Frequencies lower than 20 Hz are usually felt as vibrations.
