The Phantom Menace DVD Is Coming Soon

Star Wars: Episode I The Phatom Menace releases on October 16While the long-awaited DVD of Star Wars: Episode I, The Phantom Menace is finally coming next week (October 16), when can Star Wars and DVD fans expect the DVD releases for the original Star Wars trilogy: Star Wars (A New Hope, episode 4), Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back (episode 5), and Star Wars: Return of The Jedi (episode 6)?  Find out here.

If you haven't pre-ordered your copy of Episode I, what are you waiting for?  It's a 2-disc Special Edition with over six hours of bonus programming that promises to "transport the viewer deeper into the Star Wars universe than ever before".  Disc specifications and details of the bonus features of this long-anticipated DVD can be found here.  This 2-disc set will carry a suggested retail price of $29.98.  Pre-order your copy from Buy.com today for only $18.95 (36% off).  Read more.

Superbit™ DVDs

"The Fifth Element" Superbit DVDColumbia TriStar is releasing a new series of Superbit™ DVDs starting October 9 that promises superior image quality through the use of higher video bit rates and unsurpassed sound quality using DTS 5.1 Surround Sound.  We got our hands on three of the five titles released, namely Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, The Fifth Element, and Air Force One.  So how good do these DVDs really look and sound?  Will the Superbit DVD series usher in a new approach to releasing movies to DVD ?  What other titles are planned for Superbit releases?  Check out our early assessment.

Multi-Channel Audio Formats: DVD-Audio & SACD

Super Audio CD logoAre you aware of the two new high resolution audio formats?  They are DVD-Audio (or DVD-A) and Super Audio CD (or SACD).  While both formats offer significant improvement to the high fidelity audio reproduction, they support multi-channel music reproduction from original multi-channel recordings and studio re-mixes. From early listening tests, the multi-channel music is awesome and totally compelling.  The best way to describe the multi-channel music experience is that it's "virtual reality" for sound.  The immersive experience revived our interest for dedicated music listening.  You have to experience these new formats on a high quality audio system first hand.  The DVD-Audio and Super Audio CD formats each has its advantages and disadvantages.  Read our new tutorials on DVD-Audio and Super Audio CD for more info.

Our First Music Review

Jerry Goldsmith "The Film Music of Jerry Goldsmith", click here to read our reviewThe Film Music of Jerry Goldsmith Super Audio CD.  Jerry Goldsmith is the composer and conductor for many movie scores and TV theme songs such as "Along Came A Spider", "Hollow Man", "The Mummy", "The Haunting", "Star Trek: The Motion Picture", "Air Force One", "Planet of the Apes" (1967).  His credits also includes TV theme songs such as "The Waltons" and "Barnaby Jones".  Considering we review DVD movies, this album is quite appropriate as our first music review.  Read our review of this multi-channel SACD and see why we highly recommend this SACD album.

"It's How They Said It" - memorable movie quotes

"You do what you are... You're born with a gift. If not that then you get good at something along the way. And what you're good at, you don't take for granted. You don't betray it. [If you do] then you betray yourself. That's a sad thing."
Morgan Freeman as Alex Cross, a police detective in
Along Came A Spider (now on DVD)

"My parents are not spies, they're not cool enough!"
Alexa Vega as Carmen, a child spy in
   Spy Kids (now on DVD)

"Oh, I hate mummies!"
Brendan Fraser as Rick O'Connell, an expert mummy hunter in
The Mummy Returns (now on DVD)
