The Story

In 1821 before Governor Rafael Montero returns to Spain, he commands an execution of three innocent men to draw Zorro (Anthony Hopkins) to a final showdown.  Unfortunately for Montero, Zorro saves the lives of the three men and left his mark on Montero's neck.  Zorro is Don Diego de la Vega, a husband and father.  Montero discovers this fact and arrests Zorro after killing his wife and taking his only daughter Elena to Spain.

After being held twenty years in prison, Diego escapes and vows revenge on Montero.  Meanwhile, Alejandro Murrieta (Antonio Banderas) is struggling to find his next drink and ready to kill the army Captain who has murdered his brother.  Diego intervenes and saves Alejandro from being arrested by the unscrupulous Captain.  With his plan for revenge, Diego trains Alejandro to be the next Zorro and to spy on Montero's plan to buy California from Mexico.  Will the two Zorros be able to free California from the grasp of the evil Montero?  Will Diego and Alejandro avenge themselves?

This action and adventure film is like no other.  The non-stop heart pounding dueling swordfights, horse riding stunts, and the sexy romance keep the audience wanting more.

Video & Audio

The image quality of this anamorphic widescreen DVD is excellent.  The colors are accurate and saturated, while shadow detail is excellent.  The cinematography is stunningly beautiful and nicely captured on DVD.  Both the DTS and Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtracks are well balanced with aggressive use of the surround channels.  As expected, the DTS soundtrack does have an edge over the Dolby Digital, as the sword fight sound effects are more visceral in quality and nuances of the soundtrack are more apparent.
