Summary: Worse than a writer's block is an indifferent writing approach without
any direction.  Literature professor Grady Tripp struggles to finish a follow-up
novel after his best seller seven years ago, with an eccentric editor on his back,
a wife who left him, a troubled student with desperate needs, and a pregnant
lover who gives an ultimatum.  "Wonder Boys" is a hilarious look at Professor
Tripp's misadventures as he figures out what's important to his life and his work.

The Story

Professor Grady Tripp (Michael Douglas) is a famous author of the modern day literary classic, Arsonist's Daughter.  That was a masterpiece that he has written nearly seven years ago, though he has not had a follow-on to that success since.  Under the pressure to produce follow-on success, Professor Tripp suffers from the complete opposite of writer's block, writer's indifference.  He has drafted over 2,100 pages of a novel, but has no idea of how he's going to wrap up the story.

Most of us look forward to our weekends, right?  You know, the whole "TGIF" (i.e., "Thank God It's Friday") thing?  But in the case of Professor Tripp, he begins one Friday morning with his wife leaving him, learning that his boss' wife, Chancellor Sarah Gaskell (Frances McDormand), is pregnant with his child and "simply" wants to leave her husband to begin a new life with him.  As if his personal life isn't already full of trouble, a deeply troubling literature student, James Leer (Tobey Maguire), draws his empathy, and his student boarder, Hannah Green (Katie Holmes), has a crush on him and offers herself as a source of comfort.  Did I mention that his eccentric editor, Terry Crabtree (Robert Downey Jr.), comes to town to check on the progress of his follow-on book?  He too is in desperate need of another best-seller success.

A startling chain of events (many of which are hilariously funny, and I don't want to give them away) finally wakes him up from his life of indifference, Professor Tripp makes some key decisions in his life as he rids himself of his vices.  He then sets off to prove once again that he is one of the "Wonder Boys".  Michael Douglas proves himself again as a high caliber actor in his role as Professor Tripp, but more impressive is Tobey Maguire's performance in playing his unique James Leer character.

The Extras

The "Wonder Boys" DVD comes with the following extra material: exclusive cast and crew interviews, an interesting Pittsburgh interactive location map with commentary by director Curtis Hanson, songs of "Wonder Boys" with commentary by Curtis Hanson, "Things Have Changed" Bob Dylan music video, and a theatrical trailer.

Video & Audio

The image quality of this anamorphic widescreen DVD is very good.  The colors are accurate and saturated, while shadow detail is well rendered.  The Dolby Digital 5.1-channel surround sound is well balanced and effective, and the dialogue is crystal clear.
