Summary: "When Harry Met Sally" is a wonderful romantic comedy about two
people oblivious of falling in love for each other.  This movie portrays the many
real-life romances and relationships with a great sense of humor and a refreshing
sense of honesty.  Be sure to enjoy this very collectible DVD with a loved one.

The Story

As if the 18-hour drive from University of Chicago to New York isn't long and painful enough for a college graduate, Sally Albright (Meg Ryan) gives her good friend's boyfriend Harry Burns (Billy Crystal) a ride to New York.  Along the way, the organized, well-mannered and cheerful Sally is forced to endure Harry's odd sense of humor, his theories about men and women, and his come-ons.

When Sally drops Harry off in New York, she thought that the miserable 18-hour drive with Harry is history.  Well, five years later Harry runs into his acquaintance Joe who is currently dating Sally but Harry doesn't recognize Sally at all.  Another five years go by and their lives cross paths again.  Harry has difficulty dealing with his divorce, and Sally breaks up with Joe.  The two become best of friends and try hard to find the other a good mate.  As life has it, the two are unable to find stable relationships.

After running into his former wife and her new boyfriend, Harry rages and takes it out on Sally who always seem so cheerful even after her break up with long time boyfriend, Joe.  Coincidentally, Sally breaks down in tears soon after finding out that Joe will marry his paralegal.  Sally realizes that Joe didn't want to marry her because he never loves her.  At her most vulnerable point, Sally falls for Harry and the two spend a night in intimacy.  Will their relationship ever be the same?  Watch this wonderful, funny movie with your love one.  Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal are young and look adorable.  They give perfect performances in their portrayal of their characters.

The Extras

The audio commentary from Rob Reiner is interesting, but you may get the shorter version from the "making-of" documentary with the cast and crew.  There are seven never-before-seen deleted scenes: "Harry Does Impressions", "How Many Men Have You Slept With?", "Sally's Bad Date", "Sleepless Night", "I Blew It", "Harry and Sally on the Couch", and "I Was Just Walking Down the Street".  The second, third, fifth and sixth deleted scenes would have been good to leave in the movie.  The Rob Reiner theatrical trailers include "The Princess Bride", "This Is Spinal Tap", and "When Harry Met Sally".  The trailer for "This Is Spinal Tap" is original and incredibly funny.  I enjoyed the young pianist Harry Connick, Jr. music video, but the video quality could have been improved.  The song is beautiful and well performed.

Video & Audio

The image quality of this anamorphic widescreen DVD pretty good, considering this film is 11 years old.  The colors are accurate and saturated.  Shadow detail is good.  The Dolby Digital 5.1-channel surround sound is well balanced.  The dialogue is clear and the "It Has to be You" musical score effectively sets the mood for the viewer.

Recommendation

Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan performed exceptionally well and complemented each other in this wonderful romantic comedy.  This movie is a contemporary classic and will be perfect to collect and watch with your loved one.
