Summary: "The Virgin Suicides" is an intriguing look at obsessional teenage love
and the pains of growing up during the 1970s.  As the film is intentionally morbid
in its portrayal of the story, it is stylistically brilliant.  If you're looking for a fresh
and intriguing drama, this DVD is worth a look.

The Story

"The Virgin Suicides" is an intriguing story about voyeurism and obsessional love during the teenage years.   It's a story about the mid-1970s and what teenagers face while growing up.  It's a story about two schoolteacher parents trying to raise five teenage girls.  It's a story about a mother exerting too much disciplines and not showing enough compassion for her girls, even when there are clear signs that they are crying out for help.  It's a story about the mother not recognizing where she had gone wrong with her daughters.  It's a story about a father being so out of it that he doesn't really realize what's happening around him.  Do you get the feeling that this film is a little morbid?  If so, then the film successfully achieves this effect.

James Wood and Kathleen Turner played the schoolteacher parents to the "T", particularly Kathleen Turner in her portrayal of the overly strict mother.  Kirsten Dunst played the sultry Lux Lisbon very well.

The Extras

This DVD includes the following extra material: "The Making of the Virgin Suicides" featurette, "Playground Love" air music video, a photo gallery set to the beautiful musical score, and two theatrical trailers.

The 23-minute "The Making of the Virgin Suicides" featurette is an insightful behind-the-scenes look at how Sofia Coppola, the 27-year old daughter of the famous director Francis Ford Coppola (who makes a guest appearance during this segment), makes her first director's debut.  It's an honest and candid look at the challenges that Sofia and the cast and crew face during the production of this film.

The music video of "Playground Love" features animated pieces of chewing gum singing the lyrics to the song.  Really!  You have to see it to believe it.  It also shows some behind the camera scenes of the production process.  It's pretty cool, and pretty funny.

Video & Audio

The image quality of this anamorphic widescreen DVD is very good.  The colors are accurate and saturated.  The shadow details are good.  The Dolby Digital 5.1-channel surround sound is very well balanced and effective.  The dialogue is clear.  During many scenes, the 1970s music was brought back to life using LPs -- you can hear the audio "pops" as the record player needle (stylus) dropped onto the vinyl record and all the realistic little "pops" and static sounds that you would expect from a turntable/record player from those days.  I thought effect was a nice creative touch.

Recommendation

"The Virgin Suicides" is an intriguing look at obsessional teenage love and the pains of growing up during the 1970s.  As the film is intentionally morbid in its portrayal of the story, it is stylistically brilliant.  If you're looking for a fresh and intriguing drama, this movie is worth a look.
