Summary: "Titan A.E." is an awesome, eye-popping animated science fiction
movie about the survival of humanity after a ruthless alien life form destroys
our planet Earth.  While many parts of this story are "borrowed" from a number
of other blockbuster science fiction movies, "Titan A.E." has enough twists to
keep the audience intrigued.  The animation and soundtrack are so awesome,
I think it's conceivable that one could even enjoy this movie without the dialogue.

The Story

"Titan A.E." is a visually stunning animated story about the survival of humanity in the thirty-first century.  In the year 3028, the Drej, a ruthless alien life form, destroys our planet Earth for fear that humanity is a threat to their existence.  On the day the Drej attacks, everyone struggles to evacuate Earth on spaceships.  Cale's father sends him on a different spaceship as he launches the "Titan" in the nick of time.  The "Titan" is a special spaceship that was built in secret and promises to hold the future of humanity's survival.  Cale (starring the voice talent of Matt Damon) is quite upset having been separated from his father at a tender age of four, although his father had promised that they would meet again shortly...

Fifteen years later, Cale is in his late teens and still has not seen his father since the day the Drej blew up Earth.  Naturally, he feels quite bitter about his father's departure.  Having been raised by a friendly alien, Cale has nearly lost all sense of human life and forgets what life was like on earth.  One day, Cale stumbles across Korso (starring the voice talent of Bill Pullman), who claims to be an old friend of his father.  Korso tells Cale about the secret map that leads to the "Titan" spaceship that his father had genetically implanted in his hand.  It is now up to Cale with help from Korso and Akima (starring the voice talent of Drew Barrymore) to search for the missing "Titan" and uncover its secret that promises to save humanity.

The animation is visually stunning, consisting of both hand drawings and computer generated images (CGI) that are beautifully integrated and feature countless three-dimensional camera pans.  You have to see it to believe it.  If you're a big fan of animation, this is like being in a candy store.  It's eye candy to the max... one of the very best we've seen.  Our jaws dropped early on in the movie--during the sequence when the Drej blows up Earth.  Wow, what a dazzling scene!  The sound effects are equally stunning and the musical score literally "rocks".  In case you're wondering, "A.E." stands for "after Earth", as the story focuses on the survival of humanity after the Drej destroys the planet Earth.  Many parts of the story isn't all that original, but the movie is very well done.

The Extras

As a Special Edition, this DVD includes a director's audio commentary, a Fox Kids' special "The Quest for Titan" featurette, four deleted scenes, two TV spots and two must-see theatrical trailers, a fantastic "Over My Head" music video by the rock group "Lit", still gallery, THX Optimode calibration, and DVD-ROM features.

"The Quest for Titan" featurette is a cool behind-the-scenes look at the movie with narration by the directors, producers, cast and crew.  The four deleted scenes are "Green Drink", "Akima's Rescue", "Ice Crystals Original Cut", and "Final Battle Original Cut".  All are very well done, with unfinished footage shown in draft animation form where the characters are drawn in by outline only.  The music video "Over My Head" by the group "Lit" is particularly cool since it incorporates special effects and animation of key sequences from the movie.  The still gallery contains numerous detailed hand-drawn sketches and finished pictures that are worthwhile to step through.

THX Optimode is a feature to calibrate the video and audio settings of your home theater system to match the THX standards to which this DVD was digitally mastered.  The DVD-ROM features an exclusive DVD-ROM game link and access to the movie web site.

Video & Audio

The image quality of this anamorphic widescreen DVD is excellent.  The colors are accurate and saturated, while shadow details are well rendered.  The stunning image quality pays tribute to the awesome eye-popping animation.

This DVD comes with a number of soundtracks, including both DTS 5.1 and Dolby Digital 5.1.  Both 5.1-channel surround sound formats are well balanced and effective.  But as you can guess, I prefer the DTS soundtrack.  It simply sounds better.  The DTS mix is spectacular in a number of scenes, with ample use of the low frequency effects (LFE) channel.

Recommendation

"Titan A.E." is a fabulous eye-popping animated science fiction movie.  While many parts of this story are "borrowed" from a number of other blockbuster science fiction movies, "Titan A.E." has enough twists to keep the audience intrigued.  The animation and soundtrack are so awesome, I think it's conceivable that one could even enjoy this movie without the dialogue.
