Summary: Lt. Frank Drebin of the original "The Naked Gun" returns in this "2 1/2"
sequel to stop the evil Quentin Hapburg from changing the course of future

energy sources.  Along the way, he is assisted by Jane and Capt. Ed Hocken (the
old gang from the original movie).  The laughs are belly-aching and non-stop, so
if you enjoyed the original "The Naked Gun", chances are you'll enjoy this sequel
as well.  The amount of bonus materials is a little scant considering this DVD's
price, but the side-splitting comedy will more than make up for it.

The Story

All of the gang from the original "The Naked Gun" return in this sequel which picks up where the first episode of the trilogy left off.  Lt. Frank Drebin (Leslie Nielsen) is reunited with his love, Jane Spencer (Priscilla Presley), who works for the newly appointed energy braintrust, Dr. Meinheimer.  As Frank follows the trail of terrorism, he uncovers the devious Quentin Hapsburg’s (Robert Goulet) plan to sabotage Dr. Meinheimer's endorsement for renewable energy (such as solar power).  Yes, Lt. Drebin and his gang from the Police Squad is out to save the world again, and the belly-aching laughs are ours to be had along the way.

What I like most about "The Naked Gun" series are its spoofs of (then) real-world current events and popular movies.  For example, this feature opens with a White House presidential dinner with President Bush in office and guests including Nelson Mandela and prominent energy producers of the world.  Among the guests is Lt. Drebin, who manages to stir things up as he eats a five-pound lobster.  At another dinner engagement a few nights later, Frank and Jane dance to final number from the movie "Dirty Dancing".  And yes, this is "The Naked Gun" that has the spoof of the clay molding scene from the movie "Ghost".  It's all too funny...

The Extras

With older movies the extra material tends to be limited because no one knew about DVD.  This DVD includes a teaser trailer, a theatrical trailer, and a group commentary hosted by Peter Tilden with David Zucker and Robert Weiss which we found to be quite interesting and informative (not to mention that a group commentary is more fun to listen to than the usual monolog of a typical director's commentary).  The commentary is also helpful if you didn't quite catch all the spoofs (as there are so many).

Video & Audio

The image quality of this anamorphically widescreen DVD is completely natural in flesh tones.  Contrast and shadow details are nicely rendered, particularly during the intimate candlelight and night-time scenes.  The DVD transfer of this nine-year old feature film is first rate.  The new Dolby Digital 5.1-channel re-mix is well-balanced and effective.

Recommendation

Director David Zucker did it again by bringing the hilarious Lt. Frank Drebin and his Police Squad gang to the life in this sequel.  The comedy never gets dull even after multiple viewings.  And because there's quite a few funny moments taking place in the background, you may have to watch it more than once to catch all of the comedic action.  If you enjoy this movie, you must check out the original "The Naked Gun" and the sequel to this sequel, "The Naked Gun 33 1/3".
