Summary:
This wonderful story about an adorable mouse in a high-value |

|
The Story
This is a wonderful, family-oriented story about Stuart (voice talent of Michael J. Fox), a mouse, who is adopted by the Little family. Based on the story from E.B. White, Stuart finds himself in the middle of loving parents (Geena Davis and Hugh Laurie), a human brother George (Jonathan Lipnicki) who rejects him, and the family cat Snowbell (voice talent of Nathan Lane) who tries to eat him upon first sight. The plot develops in a predictable fashion, but is very enjoyable nonetheless. In this movie, children are taught lessons like: family doesn't have to look alike, we should look past other people's differences, and we should put family first.
The Extras
Columbia Pictures did a wonderful job on this Collector's Series DVD release. Unlike most movies, this initial release of Stuart Little on DVD is a "Collector's Series" that is really jammed-packed with interesting and worthwhile bonus features (see listing on left side bar).
The children are sure to enjoy Stuart's Central Park Adventure game, Race with Stuart: Hasbro Interactive DVD-ROM game, and the Read-Along with Stuart storybook. Animated feature fans will find the Visual Effects Supervisors' Commentary and Interactive Featurette interesting. We particularly enjoyed the "Boat Race: Early Concept Reel with director's commentary". Then there's the more typical bonus features like "the making of" featurette, DVD-ROM and web links, art galleries, talent files, and theatrical trailers.
Aside: Usually, the first release of a movie title on DVD is a basic edition with few bonus features. The Collector's Edition release, with lots more bonus materials, usually follows months afterward. A recent example is Disney's Tarzan. The basic edition came out on February 1, followed by a Collector's Edition (a 2-disc set) on April 18. Columbia Pictures did it right with the Stuart Little DVD by releasing a Collector's Series as the debut release, particularly when it follows the theatrical release in only four months.
Video & Audio
The image quality of the DVD is top-notch. The colors are particularly vibrant and saturated due to the cinemaphotographic style of this movie. The DVD pays tribute to the colorful movie and particularly to the wonderful computer generated special effects. The use of surround sound is well-balanced and effective.
Recommendation
This DVD title (available as separate discs in either 1.85:1 Widescreen or Full Frame) is a "must have" for families with young children. The entire family will enjoy this modern fairy tale for many years to come. Collectors and fans of animated features will also enjoy this DVD as well, especially the incredible amount of well-done bonus materials.
Note to Parents: There's some objectionable language used in the Central Park night scenes (Chapters 24-27). This is probably why the movie is rated "PG", instead of the expected "G" rating considering its target audience.
