Summary:
"The Sound of Music" is a wonderful,
heart-warming film about Maria
|

The Story
Maria, realizing that the children need proper nurturing from a warm, patient, and compassionate Governess, takes on the challenge to earn their trust, to win the children's hearts, and to educate them. She quickly earns the children's trust and befriends them as Captain von Trapp leaves for a month. Maria makes the children play clothes and teaches them how to sing, starting with the famous "Do-Re-Mi" song.
The story gets interesting when Captain von Trapp brings Baroness Ella Schraeder (Eleanor Parker), to whom he intends to propose marriage, home to introduce to his children. Captain von Trapp is disappointed with Maria when he thinks that Maria has been too lenient with the children during his absence and dismisses Maria from her Governess duties. What happens next? We'll leave it at that for you to enjoy the rest of the movie.
"The Sound of Music" is so much, much more than a musical. It is a story about coming-of-age, about finding love for the first time, about finding love again, and even about being true to our principles and our political allegiance. The story is based on the real life of Maria von Trapp, who in 1949 wrote the book "The Story of the Trapp Family Singers". Though modified, the story is delightfully told in this near three-hour feature film, with many beautifully performed songs and equally stunning on-location cinematography in and around Salzburg, Austria.
Julie Andrews is exceptionally talented, as she had demonstrated in her first feature film, Disney's "Mary Poppins". She impresses us again and even more so with her performance in "The Sound of Music". Christopher Plummer is great in his role as Captain von Trapp, including many scenes in which he sings very nicely. Each of "the children" played their characters very well. We were moved with their performances.
Our most favorite scenes? Well, there's so many. Let's see, there's the scene when Maria meets the children (Chapter 11), when she teaches them to sing "Do-Re-Mi" (Chapter 20), when the children singing "The Sound of Music" to Baroness Schraeder (Chapter 26), when Maria and Captain von Trapp dances "The Laendler" (Chapter 31), and when the children sing "So Long, Farewell" to the party guests (Chapter 32) and again at the Salzburg Folk Festival (Chapter 55).
Disc One contains the feature film, plus a running audio commentary by director Robert Wise and DVD-ROM link to "The Sound of Music" web site and web events. Robert Wise's audio commentary is very interesting as it sheds light on the challenges of shooting on location in Salzburg, the casting process, how various scenes were shot, his thoughts on the talents of the cast, and how the cast got along during the shooting.
Disc Two contains the 14-minute original 1965 documentary "Salzburg Sight and Sound", in which Charmian Carr (who played Liesl) takes us around Salzburg and shows us the beautiful sights and scenery, as well as the rich musical ambiance of the city. Next, "The Sound of Music: From Fact to Phenomenon" documentary takes us on a compelling 87-minute journey from the real life of Maria and the von Trapp family to the early beginnings of "The Sound of Music" as a Broadway play, to the making of the feature film, then the international phenomenon that it became. This is followed by six previews, two TV spots, and radio spots, a 14-minute 1973 reissue audio interview with Julie Andrews and Robert Wise, an audio location interview, a 13-minute audio telegram from Daniel Truhitte, a 35-minute featurette "Ernest Lehman: Master Storyteller", "The Sounds of Music Gallery" featuring storyboards, sketches, and production stills on the topics of "Salzburg Austria - A Brief History", "Nonnberg Benedictine Abbey", "The Music Festivals", "The Anschluss", and DVD-ROM games and links to the fan web site.
And
last, there is an eight-page booklet that summarizes how "The Sound
of Music" began with the real life of Maria Augusta Kutschera, to
the book Maria wrote in 1949, to the plays, and finally to the feature
film in 1965. By the way, did we mention that there's a ton of
extra material in this DVD?
Video & Audio
The image quality of this anamorphically enhanced widescreen DVD is very good due to its high-quality THX digital mastering process. This 35-year old classic looks amazing good in DVD form. The picture is very detailed and shadow detail is good. The colors are beautifully saturated, paying tribute to the stunning cinematography of the beautiful landscape and cityscape around Salzburg. The digital surround sound is well balanced and effectively presents the wonderful songs and musical scores, as arranged by the world-renowned team of Rodgers and Hammerstein.
