Summary: Snow Day is a comedy that describes how life changes when people
are snowed in from the perspective of children and adults.  It also portrays the
initiation of the children through friendship and team play.  The humor is rather
off beat, but the movie does have some redeeming qualities.

The Story

The town of Syracuse has had no snow so far for the winter, and all the children want is a snow day so they can stay home and frolic in the snow.  Of course, parents dread those days because they are obligated to entertain their children.  The ten-year old Natalie (Zena Grey) dreams of a snow day when school is out.  Her father, weatherman Tom Brandston (Chevy Chase), is struggling to prove that he is a reliable meteorologist while trying to raise the TV station's rating.  Natalie's wish comes through after Tom correctly predicts an unexpected overnight snowfall which blocks all roads.

Hal Brandston (Mark Webber) is a teenager who thinks he is in love with Claire (Emmanuelle Chriqui).  During the snow day, he tries to get Claire to notice him and expresses his feelings for her.  Hal's mission is to win Claire's heart, but Chuck (Dave Paetkau), Claire's ex-boyfriend, stands in his way and is his arch nemesis.

The possibility of a second snow day is threatened when the snowplow man (Chris Elliott) clears all the roads.  Natalie and her friends' mission is to incapacitate the snowplow man.  Meanwhile, Tom is dealing with Chad Symmonz (John Schneider) who lies about being the first weatherman to predict the overnight snowfall on the number one station in Syracuse.

Mrs. Brandston (Jean Smart) plans to promote root beer product for her company by doing her best to work from home by telecommuting but ends up sharing quality time with her youngest son.  This movie portrays the initiation ritual for the children while they are home during the snow day, learning what true love is, reinforcing that hard honest work does pay off, and that family quality time comes first.

The Extras

The Special Features section contains cast and crew interviews, Nicksclusives, "Snow Day Scoop" featurette, and commentary with director Chris Koch and screenwriters Will McRobb and Chris Viscardi.  Chilling with the cast of Snow Day presents interviews with Zena Grey, Josh Peck, Dave Paetkau, Chevy Chase, Pam Grier, Chris Koch, Mark Webber, Chris Elliott, Schuyler Fisk and Emmanuelle Chriqui.  "Nicksclusives" gives us the behind-the-scenes look at the filming stages.

When you think snow, think hard work.  "Snow Day Scoop" featurette has interesting segments of actors talking about their outrageous snow day experiences and of filming sequences.  After this featurette, you'll learn how to make snow angels, snow balls and how to throw them.  Director Koch along with screenwriters McRobb and Viscardi humorously discuss the filming and editing of the movie.  I like their warnings to children not to dangerous stunts done in the movie.

Video & Audio

The image quality is very good, capturing the starch white snow, the dimly lit indoor scenes, and outdoor nighttime scenes.  The Dolby Digital surround is well balanced, as the intense musical score brings the audience right into the middle of the confrontational scenes.

Recommendation

Snow Day is a comedy which describes the impromptu events that occur after an unexpected snowfall.  Children are free to run around town on foot and getting into trouble.  This movie is the melting pot of all the snow day experiences.
