In the 1970's, Richard Roundtree starred in the hit movie "Shaft", and with the new millennium, a modernized John Shaft (Samuel L. Jackson) keeps the score even, not allowing even the wealthy to outsmart the system. Out on the town at a club with friends, Trey has a run-in with Walter Wade, Jr. (Christian Bale) who makes racist comments but is outwitted by Trey. Right outside the club minutes later, Trey is found dying after a fatal blow to the head. Shaft is in charge of the case, and Wade jumps bail and taunts him saying that wealth can buy freedom.
After assaulting Wade in public during the initial arrest, Shaft is transferred from homicide to narcotics and now vows to bring down drug lord Peoples Hernandez (Jeffrey Wright). Peoples is ruthless and makes the connection with Wade when he is brought in after having skipped the country for two years. With double trouble on his tail, Shaft needs to locate the only eyewitness Palmieri (Toni Collette) and keep her alive for the trial. He is out to make crime pay up but is soon chased by corrupt cops, vengeful drug lords, and even the eyewitness' family. There were two special appearances: Richard Roundtree as uncle Shaft and the original "Shaft" director as Mr. P.
The bonus materials include "Reflections on Shaft" exclusive cast and crew interviews, "Shaft: Still the Man" making-of featurette, "Theme from Shaft" by Isaac Hayes music video, "Bad Man" by R. Kelly music video, and theatrical trailer. The interviews, featurette and Isaac Hayes music video are informative, funny, and enlightening, though some information are repetitive.
The image quality of this anamorphic widescreen DVD is very good. The colors are accurate and saturated. The Dolby Digital 5.1-channel surround sound sounds good throughout the action scenes.
