Summary: "The Road To El Dorado" is a thoroughly entertaining, first-class
animated feature film about two friends in search of the legendary city of
gold, El Dorado.  Along the way, they survive countless life-and-death
predicaments, while further strengthening their friendship.  This latest
DreamWorks animated masterpiece is one that the entire family will enjoy,
and the DVD is worth its weight in gold.

The Story

"The Road to El Dorado" is a fantastic animated story about two friends, Tulio (a.k.a., the "Blue Guy" as referred to by my preschooler, starring the voice talent of Kevin Kline) and Miguel (starring the voice talent of Kenneth Branagh), as they set-off to find the city of El Dorado, a fabled city built with gold.  Of the two friends, Tulio is the quick-thinking one that comes up with plans and loves fortunes of gold, while Miguel is down-to-earth, loves making music with his guitar, and cannot pass up an adventure or glory.

The story takes Tulio and Miguel through a number of trials and tribulations that test their friendship, as they navigate to a map in the hopes of finding the city of El Dorado.  In what seems like a desperate moment, they stumble upon Chel (starring the voice talent of Rosie Perez) who is running away from her people.  Tulio and Miguel are captured and taken back to the native city.  We'll leave it at that so you can enjoy the rest of this movie with your family.  As a family film, this story is rich in its explorations of the value of true friendship.

The story is generally suitable for most children, except for a few sequences portraying untruthfulness (though in the context of survival) and a love interest between Tulio and Chel.  As an animation, DreamWorks continues to raise the bar for animation in a major motion picture.  The soundtrack and musical score are top notch, as it combines the legendary talents of Elton John, Hans Zimmer (Gladiator, Mission: Impossible 2), and Tim Rice (award-winning lyricist).  This is the first time this terrific trio has worked together since Disney's "The Lion King".

The Extras

"The Road To El Dorado" Special Edition DVD comes with an array of extra material, including: an exclusive filmmakers' commentary, a behind-the-scenes featurette, an Elton John music video of "Someday Out of the Blue" (the theme for "The Road To El Dorado"), a read-along adventure story, theatrical trailers, cast and crew bios, and a 3-page spread production notes.  It also features a number of DVD-ROM features: "Aztec Adventures" demo/game, brain teaser trivia game, letter and number learning activities, downloadable coloring pages, mazes, and a screen saver.

The behind-the-scenes featurette is particular insightful and entertaining as it shows us the dedication of and chemistry among the various cast and crew members during this four and a half years project.  The music video of "Someday Out of the Blue" features Elton John animated within the numerous sequences of the feature movie.  It's pretty cool.  There's a fun read-along story for the little ones to enjoy.  All in all, there's plenty to keep the whole family entertained for hours after watching the feature movie.

Video & Audio

The image quality of this anamorphic widescreen DVD is excellent.  The colors are accurate and saturated, while shadow detail is very good.  All of which pays tribute to the breathtaking animation.

"The Road To El Dorado" DVD comes with both Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1 soundtracks.  While both soundtracks are well balanced and effective, the DTS 5.1-channel digital surround sound is sensational.  The sound mix features ample use of the low frequency effects (LFE) channel.  In either soundtrack version, the dialogue is clear and the sensational musical score greatly enhances the mood of the movie.

Recommendation

DreamWorks' latest animated masterpiece, "The Road To El Dorado", is a film that the entire family will enjoy.  The DVD is loaded with bonus features that will keep the family busy for hours.  I recommend this DVD -- it's simply worth its weight in gold.
