Summary: Bob and Grace meet and fall in love with each other in the most unlikely
of circumstances.  Grace's secret will cost immense pain for each other and bring
unbearable heartache.  The great performance and chemistry among the all-star
cast produced this hilarious, loving, and heart-felt movie.

The Story

Bob (David Duchovny) and Elizabeth (Joely Richardson) Rueland are the perfect couple.  They are in love and are devoted to each other.  Grace Briggs (Minnie Driver) is warm, sweet loving, considerate of others and also in desperate need of a heart donation.  Due to an unfortunate car accident, Elizabeth dies and her heart is donated to Grace.  A year later, Grace finally works up the courage to send a thank you note to the donor's family after her friend, Megan (Bonnie Hunt), urges her on.  Although Grace wants to date, she is still very conscientious of the scar from the heart transplant and therefore reluctant to develop an intimate relationship.

Since the death of his wife, Bob struggles with daily life and seeks comfort by moving forward with the project he had promised to his late wife--building a new habitat for her beloved ape, "Sidney".  Their mutual friend, Charlie Johnson (David Alan Grier), tries to set Bob up with a blind date in the context of a double date.  Like most blind dates, this one turns sour the minute he introduces himself at "O'Reilly", an Irish Italian Pub.  Grace waits on them, and Bob immediately becomes intrigued by her wit.  I'll leave it here so that you can enjoy this beautiful romantic comedy that is sure to bring tears to your eyes and warmth to your heart.  It is a great movie for the family (with older children) since it emphasizes the importance of having faith, family bonding, generosity of the human spirit, and the miracle of love.

In this movie, David Duchovny (from "The X-Files") proves that he is a versatile actor, while Minnie Driver reaffirms her fine acting talent.  Most importantly, Bonnie Hunt demonstrates her many talents as the co-writer of the screenplay, director, and supporting actress.

The Extras

The extra material includes a running audio commentary by director Bonnie Hunt and co-writer of the screenplay Don Lake.
The music video "What If I Loved You" is quite moving and brings the audience to the center of the story.  There is one deleted scene featuring Carroll O'Connor, Robert Loggia, Eddie Jones, William Bronder, and Marianne Muellerleile singing in the Pub.

Video & Audio

The image quality of this anamorphic widescreen DVD is very good.  The colors are accurate and saturated.  Shadow detail is excellent.  The Dolby Digital 5.1-channel surround sound is well balanced.  The dialogue is clear, and the wonderful music score effectively engages the viewer in the emotion of this film.

Recommendation

If you're looking for a romantic comedy that will make you laugh and fill your heart with joy and warmth, look no further.  Be sure to enjoy this movie with the one you love and those that are dearest to you.
