Summary: "Me, Myself & Irene" is a hilarious, though deranged comedy about
Charlie, a mild-mannered Rhode Island state police officer, who flips out one
day and lets his split personality "Hank" take over his life.  During his assignment
to return the wanted Irene back to upper New York, they encounter some wild
and off-beat situations.  If you don't mind the foul language and deranged
comedic approach, this movie may be your cup of tea.  The very same comedic
approach may be offensive to some viewers.

The Story

Charlie (Jim Carrey) is a mild-mannered Rhode Island state police cadet who marries the prettiest girl in town.  But his luck starts to change on his wedding day when his bride falls for the chauffeur.  Shortly thereafter, his wife gives birth to three baby sons who have "year-round tans".  It is obvious to everyone in town that the three boys are not Charlie's.  However, out of deep respect for his wife, out of fear of confrontation, and out of love for the children, Charlie does not raise an issue with his wife.  All of his friends know better, though most never confront Charlie about it.  Behind the scenes though, Charlie is the laughing stock of the small town.  One day, Charlie realizes how folks are looking down at him and he flips out, allowing his split personality "Hank" to take over.  Hank is in every sense the complete opposite of Charlie.

Irene (Renée Zellweger) is a gal who is wanted by the law enforcement authorities in upper New York state.  Unbeknownst to her, Irene was recently mixed up in some cover up regarding the grounds upkeep of a major golf course.  Stopped by the Rhode Island state police, Irene is sent back to New York under Charlie's supervision.  Together, they make a road trip to New York.  Along the way, they encounter some strange predicaments.  (Don't worry, no cows were actually harmed in the production of this film.)  In New York, Irene quickly learns that she's caught in the middle of some corruption and seeks help from Charlie.  Or is it Hank?

The film has many funny moments and Jim Carrey is hilarious as ever.  It's amazing how well he can articulate his face!  This movie's deranged approach and the frequent use of foul language is a bit too much for me at times.  If you don't mind foul language and the deranged comedic approach (sorry, it's too unsuitable for me to write about it here), this movie may be your cup of tea.  (Don't forget to watch the extended ending called "Pop's Thumb" after all the credits roll by in Chapter 20.)  If these kinds of things are offensive to you, then better skip this movie.

The Extras

As a Special Edition, this DVD includes a director's audio commentary, six "making of" vignettes, a featurette, stills gallery, ten deleted scenes with optional extended branching version, "Breakout" music video by Foo Fighters, two theatrical trailers, three TV spots, THX Optimode calibration, and a DVD-ROM web link to online games.

The ten deleted scenes, with optional commentary, may be watched separately or in-line with the film using this DVD's seamless branching feature.  The neat thing about using the latter option is that before the deleted scene is shown, a Charlie's face visual prompt (using the graphical subtitle feature) is displayed to indicate that the deleted scene is being accessed.  The picture quality of the deleted scenes is poor and is not of the same quality as the finished film.  You can tell when the deleted scenes end, as the picture quality goes back to finished film quality.

The six "making of" vignette is a candid and un-narrated behind-the-scenes look.  You even have the option to branch to these vignettes during the movie.  In the first vignette, you can see Jim Carrey directing traffic along a Rhode Island state highway, which is pretty amusing in and of itself.

THX Optimode is a feature to calibrate the video and audio settings of your home theater system to match the THX standards to which this DVD was digitally mastered.  The DVD-ROM features an exclusive DVD-ROM game link and access to the movie web site.

Video & Audio

The image quality of this THX digitally mastered anamorphic widescreen DVD is excellent.  The colors are accurate and saturated, while shadow details are well rendered.  The Dolby Digital 5.1-channel surround sound is well balanced and effective.  The dialogue is clear while the soundtrack effectively engages the viewer.

Recommendation

If you don't mind the deranged comedic approach and foul language, you'll probably like this film.  If you enjoy the movie, the deleted scenes further enhances the comedic excursions.  Fans of this movie or Jim Carrey are likely to enjoy this DVD.
