The Story
Monica (Sanaa Lathan) and Quincy (Omar Epps) have been friends since childhood. For as long as they know each other, they both love to play basketball which serves as a special bond between them. As they grow up, they aspire to be the best and to play ball in college. Their dedication and determination land them both full scholarships to U.S.C. (University of Southern California). As freshman athletes, they have to prove worthiness and earn the coach's respect. After much dedication, hard work, and mutual support for one another, their efforts start to pay off as they are each recognized by their fellow teammates and coaches.
Since their acceptance to U.S.C., their relationship also moves to a whole new level. Due to a shocking family truth, their happiness together is short-lived as Quincy decides to turn "pro" early by joining the NBA. Later, Monica moves to Europe to play in the women's league. Their dreams to play professional basketball come true, but take each on a different path -- away from each other and their family. After playing ball in Europe for a few months, Monica realizes she misses her family and friends too much and decides to return home to reflect on her life. We'll leave it at that for you to enjoy the movie.
There's some fine acting in this movie. If you're a sports fan, a romance, or drama genre fan and enjoy an upbeat movie, you'll probably enjoy this title. Go Trojans!
The Extras
There are seven deleted scenes with optional director's commentary, entitled: "Father and Son Game", "Mother and Daughter", "Game Stats", "Coach", "I Shouldn't Have Left", "Starting Lineup", and "Monica Moves Up". Unlike the deleted scenes in many DVDs, these scenes feature the finished look of the movie. Nice touch.
There is a blooper reel, followed by audition tapes featuring Omar Epps and Sanaa Lathan. Next are animated storyboards of several sequences, including "First Kiss", "Spring Dance", "College Basketball Montage", and "Showtime". You can view the storyboards as they automatically advance to show the progression of the scene and watch the actual finished scene.
This is followed by a music video entitled "Dance Tonight" by Lucy Pearl. The original theatrical trailer is also included. An original documentary entitled "Breaking the Glass Ceiling -- The Rise and Acceptance of Women Competitors" features real-world prominent women athletes, their tales of growing up, and their dedication and love for their favorite sports.
There are DVD-ROM features, including a cool script-to-screen feature. You can watch the movie in a small window with full motion video while browsing through the screenplay in a separate text window. A very cool feature. There's also the original theatrical web site on the DVD.
Video & Audio
The image quality of this anamorphic widescreen DVD is very good. The colors are accurate and saturated. Shadow details are excellent. The Dolby Digital 5.1-channel surround sound is well balanced and effective.
Recommendation
"Love and Basketball" is a sports-themed romantic drama portraying the pursuit of dreams and the sacrifices that athletes make to reach the top of their sport. This is an upbeat and inspiring movie that deals with real-world family issues and finding that special someone. As a New Line Platinum Series™, there is quite a bit of cool extras packed into the DVD.
