The Story
A well known Godzilla science fiction surfaces again in Japan and brings back the amazing craze for this love-hate creature. Professor Shinoda (Takehiro Murata) heads the Network to predict where and when Godzilla (Tsutomu Kitagawa) will surface on shore. Along with his smart and quick witted daughter, Io Shinoda, professor Shinoda is en route to collect scientific data on Godzilla. However, they are burdened by a news reporter, Yuki (Naomi Nishida), who constantly seems to be in the way and adding problems to the researchers.
Meanwhile, Mr. Deputy Secretary of Interior for Crisis Control Intelligence, Katagiri (Hiroshi Abe), is faced with analyzing an unusual meteorite that sank under the ocean. At the same time, the young and ambitious Katagiri wants to destroy Godzilla as opposed to his former colleague Shinoda. Katagiri launches an all out war against the Godzilla who is attracted to energy sources. At the end of the attack, the alien UFO flies toward Godzilla and fires at him. Shinoda collects Godzilla's skin sample and along with Miyasaka discovers that Godzilla has the ability to heal itself and named it "Regenerator G1".
As the military's helicopters are destroyed while thousands people are watching the alien UFO, the Japanese realizes that it is hostile. Katagiri and Shinoda are now faced with finding out what the alien wants with Godzilla's computer files and earth. Shinoda realizes that the alien needs Godzilla's "Regenerator G1" to form and adapt to our earth's atmosphere. With Godzilla's "Regenerator G1", the alien forms into Orga (Makoto Ito) and fights beastly against Godzilla.
Die-hard Godzilla fans will once again be fantastically blown away with the special effects and the twist of alien UFO. The English adaptation team that transformed this 1998 Japanese Godzilla movie into an English version deserves a round of applause for their efforts in making the movie flow more smoothly and the music more engaging.
The Extras
The expense of CGI effects is well worth it because the movie keeps the audience amazed with top notch special effects scenes. There are also a few CGI scenes that could have been significantly improved, like the ships around the meteorite or Godzilla walking in front of the blue background. Overall, the English conversion team has done an exceptional job dubbing throughout the movie and the nine minute footage cut is well appreciated, as it still keeps the integrity of the film. Godzilla never looked better, with re-designed fins, and head and arms that are more proportional.
The behind-the-scenes footage is particularly interesting as it shows the former gymnast Tsutomu Kitagawa suited up in the 188-pound Godzilla latex suit as he animates Godzilla around in miniature scale city.
There are three theatrical trailers: "Anaconda", "Godzilla", and "Godzilla 2000". Also in the special feature are talent files of director Takao Okawaba and the science fiction character Godzilla. The two-page production notes help understand the movie story line.
Video & Audio
The image quality of this anamorphic widescreen DVD is generally good. The Dolby Digital 5.1 is well balanced and effective, particularly during the fight scenes between Godzilla and Orga. The dialogue is clear through out this film.
Recommendation
A well known Godzilla science fiction surfaces again in Japan and brings back the amazing craze for this love-hate creature. If you are a Godzilla fan, particularly of the Japanese-made version, this is a must see of Godzilla's demonstration of awesome power.
