The Story
Fight Club is an intense and refreshingly original movie that breaks the rules. Edward Norton stars as Jack, a successful recall coordinator for a major car company. Jack is an insomniac who seeks evening activities to help him fall asleep. He encounters Tyler Durden, starring Brad Pitt, who liberates him from his mundane and successful professional life by co-founding an underground Fight Club. The plot begins to thicken after this. Following the first and second rules of Fight Club, that is "you do not talk about Fight Club", we'll refrain from saying anything more so that you would enjoy the movie.
The plot develops slowly, but this is one of those few movies that get better as the story develops and unfolds. Like The Sixth Sense, this movie deserves at least a second viewing and is definitely not a "single-serving movie".
The Extras
Fight Club Special Edition DVD is jammed packed with extra features. So much so that the second dual-layered disc is dedicated to bonus features. On the first (feature) disc, you can choose from any of four running commentaries. The contents of the second (supplemental) disc are "Cast and Crew", "Behind the Scenes", "Deleted Scenes", "Publicity Materials", and "Art Gallery" sections. Each of these sections are discussed below.
The "Cast and Crew" section features textual background information for the principal cast and crew members. The "Behind the Scenes" section sports "Production", "Visual Effects", and "On Location" subsections. The "Production" subsection includes the following segments: "Alternate Main Titles", "Airport", "Jack's Condo", "Paper Street House", "Projection Boot", and "Corporate Art Ball". For each segment, you choose the angle (e.g., featuring "pre-production design or principal photography) and audio (e.g., featuring various narration and commentary tracks) combination you want to view. The "Visual Effects" subsection features the-making-of commentaries and storyboards for the "Main Title", "Furni Catalog", "Ice Cave/Power Animal", "Photogrammetry", "Mid-Air Collision", "Sex Sequence", "Car Crash", "Gun Shot", and "High Rise Collapse". The special effects are world class and include nothing short of a plane crash and demolition of buildings.
The "Deleted Scenes" section contains seven deleted scenes. The "Publicity Materials" section features three trailers, no less than 12 TV spots, two public service messages/addresses (PSAs), a music video, internet spots, promotional gallery with lobby cards/advertising, press kit, and stills, and an Edward Norton Interview (text transcript only). The "Art Gallery" section features storyboards, visual effects stills, Paper Street House, costumes and makeup, brain ride-map, and pre-production paintings. We told you this Special Edition is packed.
Video & Audio
This is a THX certified (digitally mastered) DVD transfer. As such, the video and audio quality is top-notch. That should be enough said. The next section discusses the THX Optimode feature which makes its premier on this DVD release.
Fight Club DVD is the first to feature THX Optimode (read the full press release), a set of audio and video tests used to properly calibrate your home theater system in order to view the movie as the director intended. The THX Optimode feature can be found on the first (feature) disc in the "Set Up" or "Language and Audio selection", by selecting the "Lucasfilm THX" button. In the video section of the tests, a series of test patterns helps you to configure your video system. First is the contrast/picture set-up test pattern to adjust the contrast (sometimes called "picture") setting. Second is the brightness adjustment using the pluge test pattern. These first two tests are performed iteratively until the optimal contrast/picture and brightness settings are achieved. The third test is the tint and color set-up using the SMPTE (Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers) color bars. A blue filter (not included, but available separately from the THX web site) is recommended to properly calibrate the color and tint adjustments. If you are using component video connections to your display, this test may not be necessary. Next, a monitor performance test pattern is displayed to check for convergence errors. This test is particularly useful for CRT-based rear projection and front projection TVs. Finally, a pair of aspect ratio test patterns for 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratio displays. In the audio section of the tests, test tones (pink noise) for each of the 5.1-channel surround sound are played to verify proper decoding of the Dolby Digital 5.1-channel discrete surround sound.
Note: The Video Essentials DVD includes the video test patterns and audio tests similar to those in the THX Optimode feature (and then some), with the blue filter included.
Recommendation
We believe that not everyone will find this movie enjoyable (or agreeable for that matter). Some will even find it too intense and somewhat disturbing, as it challenges our comfort zone and conventional wisdom. However, many other viewers (like us) will find this movie refreshingly original, provocative, and entertaining. It's one of those few movies that requires a second viewing. Furthermore, this two-disc Special Edition certainly sets the standard for both quality and quantity of extra material for Special Editions.
