The Story
Dr. Sullivan Travis (Richard Gere) is portrayed as an honest, women adoring and nurturing man who has always been faithful to his wife. This fictional Dallas gynecologist juggles the emotions of women patients at work and his wife, daughters, and a live-in sister-in-law at home. Despite his mild manners and his caring and nurturing personality, Dr. T faces the possibility of losing his lovely wife Kate (Farrah Fawcett) due to a rare mental illness that causes her to regress into a childlike state. His sister-in-law Peggy (Laura Dern) and her three little girls recently moved into his home due to a separation, and is starting a drinking habit. And his two daughters, Dee Dee (Kate Hudson) who is getting married, and Connie (Tara Reid) who is competitive with the older sister, keep him on his toes. Then add to that an office literally wall-to-wall full of emotionally charged women who seek medical attention. During his time off, Dr. T relaxes by hunting and golfing where he meets up with the easy-going golf professional Bree (Helen Hunt) and starts a romantic relationship after his wife Kate is institutionalized.
The act performances are full of improvisations by the star-studded cast, as director Robert Altman leaves the door wide open for the actors to fill their roles. The movie is slow at times, but the plot does have a few twists (not to mention a surprise ending) to keep the audience's attention. This is a "chick flick" like no other. One thing to note, there is a scene of a real live birth at the end of the movie. It's very graphic like I've never seen in a movie before.
The Extras
Video & Audio
The image quality of this anamorphic widescreen DVD very good. The colors are accurate and saturated, while shadow detail is good. The Dolby Digital 5.1-channel surround sound is well balanced, with agressive use of the surround channels during the thunderstorm scene and the tornado scene. The dialogue is clear while the soundtrack effectively engages the viewer.
