Summary: "Chicken Run" is a full-length, clay-like, stop-motion animation movie
   from
the world-renowned Aardman Animation.  This type of animation is very
labor intensive and is definitely worth the effort in bringing this long-awaited
"eggs-citing" and "eggs-traordinarily" funny film to families.  I highly
   recommend this DVD.

The Story

"Chicken Run" is a full-length, clay-like, stop-motion animation movie from the world renowned Aardman Animation.  It is about the life of chickens in an English chicken farm.  The star of the movie is Ginger (voice talent of Julia Sawalha), a chicken who is persistent in trying to hatch an escape plan for her and her fellow hens at Tweedy's chicken farm.  From her perspective, they are imprisoned on the farm only to produce eggs for the mean farmers.  So she wants to escape and live freely.

Time and time again Ginger hatches up escape plans to get to greener pastures where the she and other chickens can roam free.  Of course, she always gets caught and ends up in solitary confinement, but she never gives up on her dream to get herself and the other hens out of Tweedy's farm.

One night, while Ginger breaks out in tears knowing that her chance of escaping is next to impossible, a rooster named Rocky (voice talent of Mel Gibson) flies over and lands in the chicken coop.  Realizing that Rocky can fly and works for a circus, she hatches yet another plan for escape.  In exchange for protecting Rocky from the Tweedys and the circus people who are looking for Rocky, he must teach the English chickens to literally fly the coup.  While Rocky is healing from his injury, he takes advantages of the situation and enjoys himself while allowing Ginger to believe that the physical training of the chickens will enable them to fly to freedom.

In the mean time, Mrs. Tweedy (voice talent of Miranda Richardson) realizes that her hard work is not paying off, with just a miniscule profit from the declining egg production.  Therefore, she purchases a chicken pie making machine that will revolutionize the farm and hopefully bring substantial profit.  With help from the scientific-minded Mac (voice talent of Lynn Ferguson), Ginger and Rocky now must forge on to bring the chickens to freedom before they all leave the chicken farm in the form of chicken pies.  We leave it at that so you can enjoy this "egg-citing" conclusion to this wonderful story of determination, friendship, love, and teamwork in the search of freedom.  Audience of all ages are sure find this movie "eggs-traodinarily" funny.  This movie is "poultry in motion".

The "Egg-stras"

This DVD contains a fair amount of egg-stra material: an audio commentary with directors Nick Park and Peter Lord, "Poultry in Motion: the Making of Chicken Run", "The Hatching of Chicken Run", a read-along story book with full motion film footage, two theatrical trailers, one TV spot , a preview of May 2001 theatrical release of "Shrek", production notes, cast and crew biographies, a dozen egg hunt for movie facts about "Chicken Run", and a number of DVD-ROM features.

After learning about the labor-intensive efforts of making "Chicken Run", we got an appreciation for the amazing facial expressions of the characters and the voice talents that bring life to these clay-like chickens.  "Poultry in Motion" gives us a behind the scene look at the step by step process of stop-motion framing, the actors' perspective, obstacles in achieving the voice behind the chickens, and of course a look at Mel Gibson's funny moments.  In "The Hatching of Chicken Run", we preview the history behind clay animation from Aardman Animation and clips from "Poultry in Motion".  The egg hunt consists of twelve facts that can be found throughout the interactive menus--very interesting indeed.

DVD-ROM feature entitled "Family Fun" includes a screensaver, a desktop "cluck" (clock), six printable poster sets, "Maculator" (calculator for escape plan), desktop theme, "Whack-A-Tweedy" game, nine coloring pages, "Escape From the Pot Pie Machine" game (let's just say I was no good at it), ginger pet, four character posters, and online web events.

Video & Audio

The image quality of this anamorphic widescreen DVD is simply top notch.  The colors are accurate and saturated, while shadow details are excellent.  The stunning picture quality pays tribute to the beautiful animation.

This DVD features both Dolby Digital 5.1-channel surround sound and DTS-ES Matrix surround sound.  We prefer the DTS soundtrack, hands down.  It is simply more awesome, not to mention a matrix back surround channel.  We used our Sony STR-V444ES receiver which features Sony's proprietary virtual 6.1 matrix surround sound processing, which simulates the effects of a back surround channel with just the usual left and right surround speakers.  The DTS-ES Matrix surround sound is awesome, particularly in the scene where Ginger and Rocky are in the oven of the chicken pie making machine.  You can hear the sound of the flame move from right surround to left surround as the flame ignites around them.

Recommendation

"Chicken Run" is a wonderful clay-like, stop-motion animation about persistence, courage, and determination in the quest for freedom.  It is an "egg-citing" and "eggs-traodinarily" funny film that the entire family will enjoy again and again.  I highly recommend this DVD.
